  • As I approach the end of my career, I look back at my teaching evolution from being a scared, young educator, with no idea how to really teach children, to a veteran author-teacher-mentor who truly loves the physical education profession. None of which would be possible if it had not been for the passionate teachers who came before me and shared with me their joy and expertise.   • Objective: All students will actively engage in the mysterious game of Trick or Treasure because what is unveiled could be a trick or could be a treasure. Trick or Treasure provides a fun, high-energy outlet for students to reinforce fitness skills, strategy and deception.
  • OBJECTIVE: In “The Rivalry”, students will have fun facing various opponents in this friendly competition among teams who are trying to defeat their rivals. Each team will compete against other teams by playing Rock, Paper, Scissors or rolling dice to collect points or to perform exercises in order to win The Rivalry.
  • OBJECTIVE: Did you know that there is a group of tiny, but sneaky invaders that can make your bodies sick? These invaders, called germs are lurking everywhere, ready to creep into your body without being noticed. Explore with your class as you share some facts about germs and how students can protect themselves from these tiny organisms. Grab your scooter and be prepared because the Germ Invasion is coming!
  • OBJECTIVE: Each student will partner up to form a Dynamic Duo. Each Dynamic Duo will be given many opportunities to demonstrate teamwork and communication in order to earn points by completing the silly, Dynamic Duo Challenges.
  • OBJECTIVE: Rapid Fire RPS (Rock, Paper, Scissors) is a fast-paced, exciting game, requiring a little strategy, luck and honesty. Rapid Fire RPS can be used as a warm up or full on game to integrate and reinforce jogging and walking as great forms of exercise.
  • OBJECTIVE: Quick Six is an aerobic-based game to be introduced as a fun, prerequisite to the PACER test or as a great activity to get students jogging. Teams must demonstrate persistence, perseverance and have a little luck in order to become the Quick Six champions.
  • OBJECTIVE: The game of Personal High Jinks is a team-based challenge that provides a great way to introduce personal hygiene, while reinforcing the skill of targeting, accuracy, and finesse with a little bit of perseverance and some silly high jinks.
  • OBJECTIVE: Derived from the original game of Pace Maker (PE2theMax by J.D. Hughes, 2005), the outrageously aerobic game of Pace Maker II reinforces the concept of pacing and its importance in physical activity, while introducing and reinforcing various locomotor skills.
  • OBJECTIVE: According to www.dictionary.com, noodling means to improvise, experiment, or think creatively. Come take an imaginary trip, Noodling through Time as students explore, develop and improve ways to manipulate a foam noodle. Students will practice visual tracking, throwing for accuracy, balance, noodle control, catching and teamwork skills using foam noodles. Today we are going to get into our time machine and travel all over the world to the past, present and future. Our noodle will change into something different everywhere we travel. We will not know what the noodle becomes until we arrive to the new destination. It is now time to travel. Hold your noodle above your head and spin your body like a helicopter propeller as fast as you can. Ready and begin…..10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1……
  • OBJECTIVE: Let ‘em Roll, derived from the game of EcSTATIC Bowling is a high energy target-based game where cooperation, speed and accuracy are essential to be successful. Teams will race to complete the various target and level challenges.
  • OBJECTIVE: It’s Going to Blow is a great lead up game for lifetime games such as Cornhole, KanJam, and Kid’s Cup Pong. Students will develop and refine Frisbee, bean bag and ball throwing/tossing, and bouncing skills for accuracy, learning to demonstrate and execute hitting targets at various distances. SCENARIO: the evil and sinister Clive Crazington has infiltrated our school and armed enough explosives that will release the zombie virus if all of the explosives are not disarmed in time. It’s up to the students of place your school name here to work as a team to disarm all of the explosives in order to save the entire school from the zombie outbreak.
  • OBJECTIVE: Grinchmas will be one of your go-to favorites to get your students into the holiday spirit. Co-authored with my great friend and colleague Butch Soles, Grinchmas was birthed out of the games Stack Attack and Blockheads from PE²: Double the Physical + Double the Education = Double the Fun (2011), Grinchmas is an ideal game to help students practice and improve throwing and bowling for accuracy, and offensive and defensive strategy. Grinchmas combines the art of cup/bucket stacking, the strategy, and tactics incorporated in offense and defense, the skill of throwing and bowling to hit various targets, along with the “never give up” attitude it takes to be successful. SCENARIO: The grumpy, old Mr. Grinch and his Grinch relatives are back at it once again to try and take away the joy of Christmas by stealing the children’s presents and destroying all of the Christmas trees! It is up to the children of Arborville to save Christmas by sending all of the Christmas presents back down the chimney and returning the Christmas trees to all of the families of Arborville.
  • OBJECTIVE: Derived from the classic Hasbro game of Guess Who? (www.hasbro.com), the high energy, game of Guess Who Fitness will have your students actively moving and strategizing to see who can guess the opponent's mystery athlete the quickest.
  • OBJECTIVE: The Oxford Dictionary defines ecstatic as feeling or expressing overwhelming happiness or joyful excitement.   • OBJECTIVE: This zany, action-packed teamwork game reinforces spatial awareness, throwing for accuracy, bucket manipulation, eye-hand coordination, communication, patience and most importantly…..cooPEration!
  • OBJECTIVE: To reinforce the skills of throwing, catching, accuracy, cooperation, hand-eye coordination, and teamwork in a time where the future of physical education is a stake. SCENARIO: The future of physical education is at stake because the FBI has informed all PE teachers to be on alert for a mysterious villain known as the “sedentary terrorist”. The sedentary terrorist is against kids getting active and having fun, threatening to destroy the gymnasiums all over the world. I entered our gym this morning and found what appears to be explosives lying everywhere. I need your help! In order to save our gym from destruction and losing our physical education program, we must work together to disarm all of the explosives and defeat the evil, sedentary terrorist.
  • OBJECTIVE: Derived from the classic game of Connect Four (by Milton Bradley), the teamwork game of Connect 4-Fun will get everyone active and hyped about whose team is going to demonstrate the best communication and strategy.
  • OBJECTIVE: Derived from “Hoop Stealers,” (Ross Chakrian @Mr_C_PE), the heart-racing and captivating game of Capture the Hoop will highly engage and reinforce dribbling and ball handling skills. Students will be given numerous opportunities to practice and reinforce ball manipulative skills associated with dribbling, tossing, catching and ball control.
  • OBJECTIVE: Adapted from the game Cold Hard Cash (HyPEd Up, 2017), We’re on Lockdown is a high energy, non-stop fitness game where teamwork and perseverance are crucial to find the hidden keys. The hidden keys will then be used to unlock each safe to expose the mystery code to escape the lockdown.
  • OBJECTIVE: Adapted from the game Hula Hut Throw Down (PE2theMax II, 2011), Volleyblaster is an awesome follow up game to reinforce the skills of volleyball. Volleyblaster combines the art of hula hut building, the tactics incorporated in offense and defense, the serving skills of volleyball and hitting various targets, along with the “never give up” attitude it takes to be successful.

  • Reinforce the skills of badminton with this awesome follow-up lesson of Birdie Battle. Birdie Battle reinforces spatial awareness, using the underhand badminton striking skill for accuracy, and eye-hand coordination.
  • This bundle contains 69 Physical Education essential questions and 26 Vocabulary Words to be posted on my word wall in the gymnasium. Each EQ and Word Wall (WW) will be discussed and/or illustrated at some point during the physical education year. I felt that each of these EQs and vocabulary words should be incorporated into my curriculum and covered to ensure a balance of learning in my physical education class. I believe these EQs and words will make a significant difference in building students’ background knowledge and comprehension. Each EQ and Vocabulary Word has been typed up on its on page.   • Objective: Students will develop and improve Frisbee manipulation skills of visual tracking, accuracy, control, throwing, and catching. Frisbee Frenzy utilizes various positions to provide teammates multiple opportunities to communicate and elicit teamwork and strategy to become team champions.
  • A fun and educational way to play bingo developed by J.D. Hughes. This cross curricula and active team game is suitable for use in classrooms, PE classes, and after school programs. Players earn the right to turn over a bingo chip by completing an activity and matching the correct capital with the corresponding state. Earn enough bingo chips and your team can win the game! State Lingo Bingo is an excellent game to reinforce and provide multiple opportunities to learn the 50 U.S. states and their capitals. The combination of map reading fundamentals, fitness, and teamwork forces teammates to communicate and strategize in order to complete their States or State Capitals Bingo Card faster than the opposing teams.
  • OBJECTIVE: Watch as each team races to “stash their cash” in this fun, competitive game that provides a great way to introduce money recognition and addition, while integrating fitness and perseverance.
  • OBJECTIVE: This whacky game, created by my great friend and colleague Mickey Eidson that he derived from an old-school TV show reinforces spatial awareness, using the forehand, backhand, and overhand paddle striking skills for accuracy, and eye-hand coordination. PaddleStar Galactica will test each student’s accuracy by challenging them to hit and destroy various targets before the time elapses.
  • Objective: Match Madness is a high energy, nonstop fitness game. The key to success in this game is to find multiple hidden card matches. Note: “What lies Beneath?” is a great game to play with Grades 3 through 8 in conjunction with Match Madness due to similarities in game set up.
  • OBJECTIVE: The Savage Sumos are angry because the hungry, village peasants are taking their food supply of noodles the Sumos eat to become Sumo Legends. Peasants must travel through the Sumo’s village, avoiding the Sumo’s clutches in order to find noodles and bring home to their families.
  • Objective: Challenge students’ throwing accuracy and spelling skills through the hair-raising game of Scrabblistic. In Scrabblistic, students must score points in order to earn scrabble tiles, and in turn, stretch the student’s minds by providing multiple opportunities to recall and practice spelling words. The combination of spelling fundamentals, exercise, memorization, and teamwork forces players to strategize while constantly earning tiles in order to spell words and earn as many points as possible.
  • Objective: Adapted from the game In the Zone (Hughes, J. 2002. No Standing Around in My Gym. Champaign, IL: Human Kinetics), Catch Me if You Can emphasizes teamwork and strategy through a high-energy passing and catching manipulative game.
  • From my book PE2theMax II: Stepping up the “Game” in Physical Education, in the game of Going Cuckoo, students must cooperatively and quickly work together to get all of the misplaced Cuckoo eggs safely to their mother’s nest, while reinforcing throwing, catching, hand-eye coordination, and cardiovascular fitness. Scenario: There are two common kinds of cuckoos in North America, the blue-billed cuckoo and the red-billed cuckoo. Bird watchers have observed and learned that cuckoos do not like to care for their young. The sad truth is that cuckoos actually lay their eggs in another bird’s nest and leave them to be hatched and cared for by another bird. To avoid the risk of extinc- tion, a group of bird watchers have decided to team up and find the misplaced cuckoo eggs and safely transfer all the fragile eggs to their natural mother’s nest.

    Objective: Slingshot Golf is the final, culminating golf-like game from the series of games that include Launch It! and Slingshot. “Slingshot Golf ” too is designed as a cooperative game that will allow students the opportunity to explore various ways to develop and improve ball manipulation, and slingshot skills of trajectory, force, and accuracy.   • The objective of Scooter Skills Galore is to explore the many exciting ways to manipulate and control scooters while participating both independently and with a partner.
  • OBJECTIVE: Game Time is an excellent, movement-based game for Physical Education and for classroom teachers to reinforce and provide multiple opportunities to learn how to read clocks, convert times, and determine start and end times using word problems. The combination of clock reading fundamentals, fitness, and teamwork forces teammates to communicate and strategize in order to complete their Game Time Task Sheets faster than the opposing teams.
